Designing for a better world
The World Usability Day 2024 will take place on 14 November 2024 in beautiful Rapperswil, Switzerland, under the motto ‘Designing for a Better World’ and will celebrate its 20th anniversary. This year’s focus will be on sustainability, inclusion, ethics and other important developments for a better future. Traditionally, the event takes place at the FH OST location and is organised by UX Schweiz, the association of UX professionals in Switzerland.
Who Should Attend
All people interested in Human Centered Design and Usability. No matter if you are Designer, Requirements Engineer, Product Manager or Scientist – we all gather to make Sitzerland and the world a little bit better.
Schedule
Under the theme ‘Designing for a Better World,’ we want to show how we, as co-designers of the future, can make the world a better place – at least a little bit.
Overview of our talks:
😎 Key Note: Are we already there? – The State of UX (in Switzerland)
The 20th WUD in Switzerland is a good opportunity for reflection: What was different back then? What part do we have as (Swiss) UX experts in this? What are we proud of? What can we do better in the future? Sibylle Peuker sheds light on these questions with examples, drawing on her conversations with experts from the Swiss UX industry and her own long-standing experience in various roles.
😎 Future skills: The AI-augmented UX researcher
Dr. Susanne Schmidt-Rauch and Dr. Philipp Matter present to us in the usual entertaining way how AI can support UX research activities and ask the question whether we are on the way to the production of UX research.
😎 AI and inclusion: How can we use generative AI systems responsibly? Generative AI systems like ChatGPT are prone to stereotyping. Natalie Lerch-Pieper shows what we can do to reduce these biases and promote equal opportunities?
😎 a11y – Facts and figures
Thanks to figures, data and facts, Alide von Bornhaupt and Stefan Barac finally shed light on the often theoretical discussion about accessibility and illustrate it with practical examples.
😎 Informed choices: Designing for informed decisions
Sonja Hamann and Wolfgang M. Limbach show us in a practical way how a bank can better understand its clients and enlighten them about financial myths thanks to its own usability laboratory and quantitative and qualitative methods.
😎 Designing for the Shared Economy: Products for a 10 billion world
Reto Laemmler takes us from the user experience to the shared economy community. He shows us how we can further develop the shared economy through innovative approaches and thus create a more sustainable and efficient world.
😎 Politics Redesigned: Inside the Political Innovation Think Tank
Salimata Sophie Seck gives us an insight into the work of Expedition Zukunft and how collaborative design processes can be established in politics.
😎 Closing Note: Design for a better world
A better world: what is it anyway? And how can we as designers actually contribute to it? Sibylle Peuker takes up the thread of tomorrow, provides practical impulses and motivates us to actively help shape the future. We then discuss these ideas at the well-deserved aperitif.
Overview of our workshops:
Talking is silver, drawing is gold
Our visualisation artist Roland Siegenthaler will discover with you how you can communicate complex ideas clearly and convincingly through simple, self-drawn drawings. In this practical workshop you will learn – even without previous knowledge – to develop your creativity and communicate messages effectively.
Lego serious experience
A dream comes true: LEGO plays for adults! Michael Nöthiger and Claudia Kempf, Lego Serious Experience let you design interactive customer journeys in a playful way thanks to the newly developed LEGO Serious Experience method. You develop creative solutions and learn to represent complex processes in a tangible way.
Making informed decisions
How can you improve your day-to-day work? In this workshop, you will learn with Andreas Schliep and Christoph Castrischer-Zehnder how your team moves from endless discussions to effective action. You will get practical tools to make informed decisions together, with everyone behind them – for more clarity and success in your day-to-day work.
Designing digital spaces and systems inclusive for LGBTQIA+ users
Evianne Hübscher introduces practical (not just theoretical) frameworks to make systems inclusive for LGBTQIA+ users. You will get the opportunity to check your systems for inclusion and learn to avoid exclusion of LGBTQIA+ users.
UX-Writing: How do I find the right words?
You will get to know the power of words with Kira Stina Leuthold and Myriam Holzner in this workshop. They will show you how to effectively support your users with concise formulations and microcopy without pushing them. You will develop texts that work, fit the brand and lead both users and your company to their goals – of course, you will also try out what you have learnt firsthand.
‘the a11y game’ An educational game for business people and people who want to become one
With the self-developed ‘A11Y Game’ workshop game, Stefan Barac teaches you the basics of accessibility in a playful way. Together you solve puzzles and tasks around the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and discover how important inclusive design is for everyone involved – from management, design to development.
