World Usability Day turns 20 on Nov 14, 2024

Get ready for an epic milestone on November 14, 2024! For two decades, this amazing grassroots movement has brought together passionate innovators worldwide to champion user-centered design.

2024 Theme: Designing for a Better World

The theme of “Designing for a Better World” is demonstrated in many ways such as architects and urban planners creating accessible public spaces, companies focusing on eco-friendly packaging, software developers prioritizing inclusive digital design, community engagement platforms enhancing civic participation, sustainable transportation solutions prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists, educational materials designed for inclusivity, and green architecture emphasizing energy efficiency and occupant well-being. These efforts contribute to a more accessible and environmentally conscious world.

 World Usability Initiative

The goal of the World Usability Initiative (WUI) is to connect the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and the User Experience (UX) community and everyone who believes that great design is inclusive and usable by all, to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by establishing World Usability Day as an internationally observed day, listed on the United Nations calendar. WUI launched the Design Challenge in 2020 and the Speaker Series in 2021. Help us achieve this goal of being engaged in our global community to design for a better world.

World Usability Day 2024

Indiana Design for a Better World

This year we will focus on designing for an accessible world for all users making all experiences richer and better.

Today, our interactions are increasingly technology-dependent, connecting people from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations through digital platforms. It’s important to recognize that technology, as our common ground, needs to be accessible and empathetic to users’ intentions. By intentionally designing for an accessible world for all users, we can bridge gaps and foster understanding, making all experiences better.

Inclusive design spans both physical and digital spaces. Public areas often feature ramps, multi-language signage, designated spaces for easy access, and even audible traffic signals to help a broader range of people move freely. In the digital world, inclusivity is mainly visceral. Voice assistants, color modes in games like Fortnite, and the intuitive designs of devices by Apple or Samsung transcend language barriers, allowing people with diverse accessibility needs to interact with technology.
